A 37-year-old man has appeared in court charged with possessing more than £1m worth of cocaine, the biggest ever seizure of the drug in Northern Ireland.

Mr William Andrew Askin from Oaktree Drive in Antrim appeared at Belfast Magistrates Court today on a number of charges including possession of cocaine with intent to supply.

He was also charged with having an automatic pistol, a sawn-off shotgun with intent to endanger life and possessing ammunition.

Mr Askin was remanded in custody to appear again by video link on June 11th. The charges relate to the seizure of a van on the M1 Motorway in Belfast on Thursday night.
