A man in his 30s was arrested in relation to the murder of Siobhán Stapleton (51) shortly after her funeral yesterday afternoon.

Gardaí investigating the death of the mother of five, which took place after she had sustained serious head injuries at her home outside Thomastown, Co Kilkenny, last Friday, arrested the man and brought him to Thomastown Garda station.

He was last night being detained under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Gardaí said he was arrested in the Thomastown area.

More than a thousand people attended the funeral.

Ms Stapleton was brought by hearse to St Kieran’s Church in Tullaherin, located between Thomastown and Bennetsbridge, Co Kilkenny.

The mourners were led yesterday by her husband Peter, her son Niall and daughters Deirdre, Ciara, Gráinne and Sinéad.

The family home, Glebe Lodge, remained sealed off by gardaí yesterday while the funeral proceeded a few kilometres away.
