A Co Mayo man charged with murdering a woman in Ballina was further remanded in custody at a Dublin court yesterday for preparation of a book of evidence.

Mr Dean Richardson (20), of Greenhills Estate, Ballina, is accused of murdering Ms Gillian Thornton (20) on October 17th last.

Solicitor Ms Claire Galligan told Dublin District Court that she was appearing on behalf of the Mayo State Solicitor under the new Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act. The Act allows defendants to be brought before the District Court nearest to their place of detention for remand hearings rather than have to attend the original court.

Mr Richardson was remanded in custody by Judge Catherine Murphy to appear before Ballina District Court on February 10th with time extended for service of a book of evidence.
