A lorry driver, Mr Paul Sherlock (36), of Drumconrath, Co Meath, has been charged at Belfast Magistrates' Court with smuggling the largest quantity of cigarettes and drink ever seized in Northern Ireland.

Nearly 2.4 million cigarettes and 6,500 litres of spirits were found on Tuesday when customs officials searched a lorry at Warrenpoint Co Down, the court was told.

Mr Sherlock was charged with attempting to evade customs duty of £335,000. He was remanded on bail for a week.
