An 83-year-old pensioner has been sent forward for trial charged with rape, sexual assault and indecent  assault involving five girls.

Mr Jack Fahy, Eighterard, Oughterard, Co Galway, is charged with two  counts of rape, thirteen counts of indecent assault and one count of  sexual assault, involving the five children.

The offences are alleged  to have occurred on various dates between March, 1981 and August, 1992.

The accused was returned for trial to the Central  Criminal Court by Judge Mary Fahy of Galway District Court.

Judge Fahy heard the alleged victims in the case wanted Mr Fahy identified. She  said the only reason publication might be restricted in such cases was if there was a likelihood victims could be identified and this did not apply to this case.

Mr Fahy was remanded on continuing bail.
