Gardaí have begun an investigation into the death of a 75-year-old man by a gunshot wound in a well-known Dublin pub, writes .

The Palace Bar was closed yesterday as members of the Garda Technical Bureau carried out a forensic examination.

The man walked into the Palace Bar on Fleet Street in Temple Bar about lunchtime yesterday and ordered a whiskey. He then went to use the toilets downstairs.

Staff became concerned when he failed to return to the bar for his drink and after about 10 minutes they went to check on him.

The pensioner, who was single and lived in north Dublin, was found dead in a cubicle, having apparently shot himself with a pistol.
