A 68 year old man was "savagely assaulted" by men who broke into his home on Thursday night in Youghal, Co Cork.

Gardai said the man opened his door at about 9 p.m. to investigate noise outside, and two men forced him back into the house and demanded money. They tied him to a bed and left with about £30.

The man freed himself and managed to walk to a neighbour's house. He was taken to Cork University Hospital, where his injuries were severe but not life threatening.
