Four major Alitalia unions, including the Cigl union that had previously rejected the deal, have backed a takeover of the airline's assets by Italian investor group CAI, a union official said.

The four unions - Cgil, Cisl, Uil and Ugl - formally agreed to support the framework agreement for the takeover at a meeting at the prime minister's office, the union official said.

The deal must still win the backing of unions representing pilots and flight assistants for it to be salvaged.
