The Mahon tribunal has been adjourned as witness Tom Gilmartin has taken ill.

The tribunal was told today that Mr Gilmartin, who took the witness stand on Tuesday, was not in a position to give evidence because of illness. Hearings were adjourned until next Wednesday.

Mr Gilmartin's lawyers told tribunal chairman Judge Alan Mahon yesterday that his co-operation with the inquiry had taken its toll. The tribunal heard Mr Gilmartin has had bypass surgery since he last appeared before the tribunal.

The chairman yesterday granted a request that Mr Gilmartin's evidence would last only three hours each morning from today.

Yesterday, Mr Gilmartin appeared to cough and clear his throat a number of times during his evidence, and he stated that he had a cold.

On Tuesday when he took the stand, Judge Mahon told Mr Gilmartin that if he needed a break, other than the breaks indicated by the tribunal during the day, he should "just simply ask".

Mr Gilmartin is giving evidence in the second so-called Quarryvale module of the tribunal and is expected to be up to three weeks on the witness stand.
