Berlin - The American film Magnolia won the Golden Bear for best film at this year's Berlin festival, the Berlinale, it was announced yesterday.

Runner-up with the jury's Grand Prix was the Chinese film The Road Home (Wo De Fu Qin Mu Qin) by Zhang Yimou. Second runner-up was The Million Dollar Hotel by German director Wim Wenders.

Magnolia, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and starring Tom Cruise and Julianne Moore, paints a bleak picture of desperately lonely lives in Los Angeles in a vignette style that recalls film maker Robert Altman. German director Volker Schlondorff won the award for best European film at the film festival for The Legends of Rita.
