A British man working with Michael Flatley's Lord of the Dancetroupe was murdered last night in South Africa.

The merchandising executive was returning from the theatre to the Johannesburg hotel where the cast and crew were staying when he was attacked.

He was shot three times on the steps of the hotel. Despite the efforts of cast members, who were in the lobby of the Parkton Hotel at the time, to resusitate him, he died at the scene.

Police believe the man was the victim of a mugging. His  name has not been released until next of kin have been notified.

A spokeswoman for Michael Flatley said the dancing star was "shocked and devastated by the news of this tragic incident". He is travelling to South Africa this evening.

She said cast and crew members were also  "deeply traumatised" by the shooting.

The Lord of the Danceshow is on a six week tour of South Africa.
