A tourist was mauled to death by a pride of lions as he showered under a tree at a safari camp in north-western Zimbabwe today.

Zimbabwean businessman Peter John Evershed (59) was camping with his wife and other tourists at Chitake Campsite in Makuti near the Mana Pools nature reserve 300 kilometres west of Harare, when he was attacked as he took an evening shower in the open, a police spokesman told the state-controlled Herald newspaper.

"He screamed for help from other tourists who quickly drove to the scene flashing their lights in a bid to scare the marauding lions," the spokesman was quoted as saying.

Safari operator Steven Pop managed to scare off the predators by firing a gunshot into the air, but Mr Evershed was already dead by then, having suffered a deep gash to the throat.
