Two men have been given life sentences for the savage murder of a school teacher in Limerick last year.

Two men have been given life sentences for the savage murder of a school teacher in Limerick last year.

Mr Noel Carmody, (42) suffered more than 100 separate injuries after he was attacked and robbed in Arthur's Quay Park on September 27th, 2003.

A jury of six men and six women unanimously found 21-year-old Darren Wallace of Assumpta Park, Lee Estate, Limerick and 20 year-old Jonathan Tuohy of Edward Street, Limerick guilty of murder and robbing Mr Carmody.

The jury returned took three hours at the end of the six-week trial to reach its decision at the Central Criminal Court in Limerick this evening,.

Both the accused - who had more than 40 previous convictions between them — had denied the charges.

Their victim, from Ballingarry, Co Limerick, was single and a member of Amnesty International. The trial heard he had been actively involved in community work most his adult life.
