Minister for Arts Jimmy Deenihan will confirm today that the Light House cinema in Dublin is to reopen.

Recruitment to fill 20 positions at the cinema in Smithfield, which closed in controversial circumstances last April, has already begun.

The cinema opened in May 2008, but closed last year because its operators, Neil Connolly and Marette Dillon, owed €156,856 in unpaid rent. They signed a lease in 2007 which would have seen the rent double to €200,000 per year. The cinema will be taken over by Element Pictures, which made The Guard, Garageand The Wind That Shakes the Barley.
