Three people were rescued on Lough Derg today after a speedboat broke down and drifted onto rocks.

The Lough Derg RNLI lifeboat was despatched by Valentia Coast Guard to assist this morning after it picked up a distress transmission at 11.35am.

Eleanor Hooker, helm of the Lough Derg lifeboat, said passing cruiser went to the assistance of the vessel and passed the tow to the lifeboat when it arrived on scene near Deer Rock.

"All persons on board the casualty vessel were safe and unharmed," Ms Hooker said.

The lifeboat towed the boat to the Derg Marina at Killaloe.
