London - The Liberal Democrats yesterday risked unpopularity with a call for a massive tax rise to relieve pressure on interest rates and safeguard thousands of jobs.

The party's treasury spokesman, Mr Malcolm Bruce, told the Liberal Democrat conference in Brighton there was "very, very little time" left for the government to act to save industry from slumping into deep recession.
