THE Riyadh bureau of the Arabic-language newspaper al-Hayat has received two letter-bombs mailed from Egypt over the last 10 days, a source close to the daily said yesterday.

"The first was received on January 4th and the second on January 11th," said the source, who requested anonymity. "Both were discovered before they went off and removed by police."

He gave no further details. Officials would not comment.

The London-based newspaper has been a target of several letter bombs at its offices in London and the US.

President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt said yesterday that he doubted letter bombs sent to London, Washington and New York came from Egypt, despite carrying Egyptian stamps and postmarks.

He said the Egyptian authorities had not received an original of the envelopes in which the letter bombs arrived, although II days have passed since the first of the letter bombs was detected in Washington.

An Egyptian government newspaper, quoting a senior security source, went further than Mr Mubarak, saying it was impossible the 17 letters came from post offices in the city of Alexandria, the postmark they carried.
