The former Government Press Secretary Joe Lennon is to become special adviser to the Tánaiste and Minister for Finance, Brian Cowen, it was revealed tonight.

Mr Lennon was formerly Director of Communications for Taoiseach Bertie Ahern before taking the position of Director of Communications with the Health Service Executive in 2006. He stepped down from this post last week.

He served as Government Press Secretary during Mr Ahern's first term as Taoiseach.

Approval was granted at the weekly Cabinet meeting today for Mr Lennon's appointment as Mr Cowen's Special Advisor.
