PARIS - The leader of the extreme right, Mr Jean Marie Le Pen, called on President Chirac to resign after the first round results yesterday. "Chirac is beaten, be must go," the National Front leader said.

The front "has won a great victory," he said, after computer predictions credited his party with just under 15 per cent of the vote.
