An Táin Bo Cuailgne:The full set of tapestries featuring images of drawings made by the late Louis le Brocquy for poet Thomas Kinsella's translation of Ireland's oldest epic saga, An Táin Bo Cuailgne (The Cattle Raid of Cooley), sold at auction last night.

The final bid of €245,000 grew to a purchase price of €294,000, after commission.

The buyer was an anonymous Irish collector.

Poet Thomas Kinsella had been in touch with the auction house to clarify a note in the catalogue which may suggest le Brocquy collaborated with him in the translation.

“The collaboration was actually with [publisher] Liam Miller . . . we are grateful to Thomas Kinsella himself for setting the record straight,” said Ian Whyte of Whyte’s Auctioneers.
