GENEVA - A UN backed disarmament conference yesterday adopted a 1997 agenda which could lead to negotiations on a global ban on landmines.

But Mr Joun Yung Sun, South Korea's ambassador and the current president of the conference, conceded that the landmines issue remained divisive. He said a formal consensus would still be required among the 61 member states before they could enter into actual negotiations to ban the weapons blamed for killing, 25,000 people a year.

The agreement on a 1997 agenda came after nearly a month of haggling in the UN sponsored talks.
