A labourer fired after just three days into a new job has been awarded over €2,800 in compensation.

Edward Burns, of Toome, Ballymahon, Co Longford, claimed that on his third day on site he was asked to work a Saturday, but that morning his car broke down.

He claimed the foreman was abusive to him and told him he was not wanted back.

Mr Burns was working for Monksland Construction Limited, of Custom Place, Athlone, Co Westmeath, at the time.

Based on uncontested evidence the tribunal initially awarded €6,900, but on appeal the sum was reduced to awards totalling €2,816.50.
