The number of people suffering from severe food poisoning will continue to rise unless E.coli 0157 infection is classified as a notifiable disease in the Republic, the Labour Party consumer affairs spokeswoman, Dr Mary Upton, has warned.

Responding to Eastern Health Board figures indicating a significant increase in food poisoning caused by the more serious microbes, including the potentially fatal E.coli 0157, Dr Upton said the Republic had not learned the lessons caused by a Scottish E.coli outbreak which killed 20 people.
