The new Lord Mayor of Cork is Cllr Joe O'Flynn, a longstanding member of the Labour Party, who was elected last night in Cork City Hall.

Mr O'Flynn succeeds Cllr Dave McCarthy, of Fianna Fail, and his election was a foregone conclusion due to an electoral pact on the city council.

An official of SIPTU in Cork, he was elected as a councillor in 1991.

A native of Fairhill, on the north side of Cork, he is married with a 17-year-old son.
