Labour councillor Michael Conaghan has been elected by Dublin City Council as the city's new lord mayor.

Following his appointment Mr Conaghan said he would publish a "new charter for the people of Dublin" covering the rights of citizens in connection to policing, planning, the environment and housing.

His election follows a swing in the balance of power on the council following the recent local elections.

Fine Gael seconded Mr Conaghan and his nomination was supported by the Green Party and Ms Wendy Hederman of the PDs. Mr Andrew Montague, another Labour councillor, was elected deputy lord mayor.
