LONDON - The British Prime Minister, Mr Major, yesterday, attacked Labour's education policies, claiming the party was "vindictive" and was promoting a "fiction" that it supported grammar schools.
Mr Major's comments in the Commons followed his earlier announcement of new measures to drive up standards in schools.
At question time, Mr Major condemned the Labour Leader, Mr Tony Blair, over his decision to send his son to a grant-maintained school and the shadow social security secretary, Ms Harriet Harman, over her decision to send her son to a grammar school.
"They care little about the wishes of parents, except when the parents are themselves," Mr Major said, to Tory cheers.
