Kilkenny fire leads to diversions

Motorists have been advised to avoid Kilmacow in Co Kilkenny today due to a fire at an oil depot in the area.

Motorists have been advised to avoid Kilmacow in Co Kilkenny today due to a fire at an oil depot in the area.

The fire was discovered shortly before midday at the depot on the R448 Kilmacow to Waterford road.

Although the fire is visible from the M9 motorway between junctions 9 and 10 the motorway unaffected by the fire.

Gardai are asking motorists travelling on the road to maintain a safe distance and not to stop or slow down suddenly as this can cause a potential hazard.

Train passengers have also been affected by the fire with Iarnrod Éireann suspending services between Kilkenny and Waterford. Bus transfers are in place.
