A journalist working for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) in Afghanistan was freed today after being kidnapped last month, her employer said.

On its website, the CBC said Mellissa Fung was safe in the Canadian Embassy and undergoing a medical checkup after being released to Canadian forces in Kabul.

Ms Fung was abducted by armed men at a refugee camp on the outskirts of Kabul on Oct. 12 and then taken to the mountains west of the capital, it said.

"News of the abduction was kept secret over concerns about her safety," the CBC said.
