Berlin - Iranian President Mohammad Khatami yesterday began a milestone visit to Germany that was hailed by Chancellor Gerhard Schroder as a "substantial new start" to ties with the oil-rich Islamic state.
Security was extremely tight in the city, where police said around seven thousand protesters staged a noisy but peaceful rally under the banner of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCR).
