Firemen in Co Kerry have spoken of their “once in a lifetime experience” after they were called on to deliver a baby while attending a fire in Tralee, writes Anne Lucey.

Shortly after 7.15pm on Wednesday, Tralee firefighters were attending a chimney fire at Oak Park Road.

The owner of the house was out and the firefighters were attempting to gain access through the front door when a car going by pulled up and the driver, a man in his 20s from Limerick, jumped out shouting his wife was about to give birth.

“At first I thought is he telling this right?” John M O’Donnell said. The firefighters went to the aid of the woman in the back of the car and delivered a baby girl.

“We are all trained as first responders by the council, so we were able to help. This is a once in a lifetime experience,” Mr O’Donnell said. The mother and baby were taken to Kerry General Hospital where both are doing well.
