THE ACTING United States ambassador has encouraged Ireland to maintain its spending levels in education in an effort to climb out of the recession.

Robert Faucher said that it was critical for countries not to reduce the amounts being spent on education if the global downturn was to be reversed.“It is seen as a critical leg of climbing out of the recession . . . When I talk to American businesses here . . . one of the things that still attracts them to invest in Ireland is the well-educated workforce,” said Mr Faucher who became charge d’affaires in January, ahead of the arrival of new ambassador Dan Rooney.
