Goma - At least 56 people were killed in eastern Congo yesterday when militiamen loyal to the President, Mr Laurent Kabila, attacked a military camp, rebel officials said.

Residents and rebel soldiers said a coalition of Rwandan Hutu Interahamwe militiamen and traditional Mai Mai warriors attacked a military camp at Ndosha, about 4 km north of Goma yesterday morning.

"Fifty were killed on the side of the assailants," a senior rebel leader, Mr Lunda Bululu, said, claiming that five rebel soldiers had been wounded, but none killed.
