A Kildare man had retreated, from his guilty plea to rape and made a "cowardly" threat to kill himself in custody, Mr Justice Carney told the Central Criminal Court yesterday.

Mr Justice Carney said he, was not impressed by Mr Liam Scully's suicide threat. He said a probation officer had twice visited Mr Scully, of Lipstown, Narraghmore, while he was in custody and the defendant told her he was not to blame and described himself as the victim.

The judge suggested that in light of Mr Scully's claims of innocence, the case should be tried by a jury and he adjourned the case to July 25th.
