Staff at ICT's customer services centre in Belmullet, Co Mayo, are to be briefed by management today amid fears for the future of the plant.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that the company is on the verge of major downsizing, with as many as half of the Mayo jobs going to India, where hourly operating costs are said to be one-fifth of those in Ireland.

ICT executives will today brief staff on a restructuring prompted by a global downturn in sales and a week dollar.

The plant in Mayo employs up to 80 full-time and 50 part-time workers, and the company operates customer contact centres in Athlone and Dublin.

ICT, which has been supported by Údarás na Gaeltachta, is based in Belmullet industrial estate, and the authority has had talks with ICT over recent weeks.
