The chief executive of a Carlow radio station has been appointed general secretary of the Irish Vocational Education Association (IVEA), the representative body for VECs. Mr Michael Moriarty, a former teacher, has been chief executive of CKR Radio for the past seven years and is president of Carlow Chamber of Commerce.

He said yesterday one of his primary roles would be to "promote the dynamic educational role presently being played by the VECs in Irish society. As we approach the millennium the IVEA intends to enhance its profile considerably, affording proper regard to its vital role in Irish society."

The Department of Education has decided that the number of VECs will be reduced by amalgamation in the next few years from 38 to 23.
