Romano Prodi's new centre-left government today won a confidence vote in Italy's lower house of parliament, the speaker of the chamber said.

The vote was the second and final stamp of approval from the assembly after the upper house approved Mr Prodi's administration on Friday.

Mr Prodi beat former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi's centre-right bloc last month in the closest election in Italy's post-war history.
