Israeli health officials were yesterday considering banning all beef imports from Ireland over fears of BSE, Peter Hirsch berg reports from Jerusalem. Israel imports several hundred tons of meat a year from Ireland and health officials fear that meat smuggled into the Republic from Northern Ireland has made its way to Israel. Israel does not import beef from Britain.

There is a strong demand for beef in Israel for tomorrow's Passover Jewish holiday.
