Jerusalem - Israel's parliament banned imports of pork and other non-kosher meats yesterday, passing a law assailed by a left-wing legislator as a surrender to religious coercion. "I think it is outrageous bringing in religious coercion from the back door and tampering with constitutional provisions," Mr Naomi Chazan said.
Kosher meats have to be slaughtered and prepared according to strict religious procedures. Many Jews in Israel ignore the injunctions.
