London - The speaker of Britain's House of Lords, under fire for spending £650,000 on refurbishing his state apartments, publicly defended his expensive choice of wallpaper yesterday before a committee of MPs.

'It is a noble cause and future generations will be grateful,' Lord Irvine told his inquisitors. 'We are talking about quality materials which will last for 60 or 70 years.'
