Irishman named for UN job

Mr Denis J Halliday, an Irish career diplomat, has been appointed UN under-secretary-general for human resources.

In 1994 Mr Halliday was appointed an assistant under-secretary general for human resource management in the UN's department of administration and management. He is a graduate of TCD.

The new United Nations Secretary General, Mr Kofi Annan, yesterday announced 19 senior appointments, most of whom had served under his predecessor, Dr Boutros Boutros-Ghali.
