An Irishman has been questioned by police over the killing of a pensioner in Italy.

An Irishman has been questioned by police over the killing of a pensioner in Italy.

The 43-year-old had been detained over the killing in Arcidosso, a town on Amiata mountain in Tuscany.

Police said Silvana Abate (72) had her throat cut and was stabbed repeatedly at her home in what appeared to be a robbery which went wrong.

Police said the man could face charges of manslaughter over the killing.

The man, who has been living in Arcidosso for two years, denied killing the woman. He was arrested after medical staff at a local hospital called police when he came to them with a cut on his leg and with blood on his clothes.
