Ireland and Britain are to step up co-operation on tracking sex offenders travelling between both jurisdictions.
The governments are to sign a Memorandum of Understanding in coming weeks to formalise the bilateral agreement.
The initiative will allow police authorities in both countries to share information on sex offenders in the interests of public safety.
Police have been particularly concerned at how easily offenders can exploit the border to travel freely between Northern Ireland and the Republic.
The new agreement will assist authorities to monitor the whereabouts and activities of suspicious individuals if deemed necessary.
A Department of Justic spokesperson said: "The Memorandum of Understanding will be signed between both governments in coming weeks."
The initiative was approved at the Government's weekly Cabinet meeting in Dublin yesterday.
Earlier this year, the SDLP in Northern Ireland called for an All-Ireland Sex Offenders Register to stop criminals exploiting the Border.
