Iranian oil officials said today they had signed a $2 billion oil deal with a Japanese consortium which has been delayed by US accusations that Tehran is purusing nuclear weapons.

The deal will see Japan Petroleum Exploration Co (JAPEX) and INPEX Corp and Tomen Corp develop the southern half of the giant untapped Azadegan oilfield.

It is one of the biggest international oil contracts since the 1979 Islamic revolution.
