Iran has hanged 10 men convicted of murder and armed robbery, media reports said today.

The country's state-owned Irannewspaper said four of the men, identified only by their first names, were executed yesterday in the notorious Evin prison just north of the capital, Tehran.

The independent Etemaadnewspaper said that six other men were hanged yesterday in the city of Zanjan, 300 kilometres west of the capital. They were convicted of armed robbery and murder.

It brings the number of people executed in Iran so far this year to 40.

Murder, rape, robbery, kidnapping, and drug trafficking are all capital offences in the Islamic republic.
