A PARIS magistrate has ordered that an Irishman, suspected of IRA membership, and a Frenchman, alleged to have repeatedly sheltered him, should be detained in custody.

Mr Paul MacGarrigle (40), who has served a sentence in Britain for IRA activities, and Mr Franck Lebret Richer (44) are accused of "criminal association in connection with a terrorist group", a judicial source said.

Mr MacGarrigle, who was allegedly found in possession of a starting pistol converted into a conventional gun, is also accused of possession of an offensive weapon.
