The Provisional IRA's command structures still exist, Northern Ireland's top policeman Sir Hugh Orde claimed today.

The PSNI Chief Constable said he did not believe the organisation posed a threat to national security.

He said the organisation's command structures had not changed since last month's St Andrews talks.

"I would refer you to the last report of the Independent Monitoring Commission," he said during a meeting of the Northern Ireland Policing Board in Newcastle, Co Down.

"The structure still exists. Significant restructuring took place within the organisation after the IRA statement in July 2005.

"There has been a winding down of activity as evidenced by the recent IMC report which we fully co-operate with."

"I do not see this currently as a threat to national security."
