IRA membership trial under way

The trial of two Louth men on firearms and IRA membership charges has opened at the Special Criminal Court in Dublin.

Des Ryan (54) and Neil Smith (34), Donore, Drogheda, have pleaded not guilty to membership of the IRA in August.

Mr Ryan has also pleaded not guilty to the unlawful possession of a sawn-off, 12-gauge shotgun and two shotgun cartridges.

The trial before Mr Justice Paul Butler, presiding, is expected to last four weeks.
