The Health Service Executive (HSE) has launched an investigation into the death of a baby at a national neonatal unit.

It expressed its deepest sympathies to the family of the child, who was born at Cavan General Hospital last week.

It is understood the infant was ill when he was born and was subsequently transferred to a specialist neonatal unit at the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin.

"As is normal procedure, the HSE will closely examine the circumstances of this case," it said in a statement.

"A clinical incident review is being planned which will involve a multi-disciplinary team reviewing all aspects of the care provided in this case."

The HSE offered its support to the child's family and the coroner has been notified.
