Cork gardaí are investigating the death of a man from head injuries he sustained last week.

Mr Ian Queally, 37, died last night in Cork University Hospital.

Mr Queally, who is originally from the Blackrock area of Cork city but is living in the Victoria Cross near County Hall, presented himself with injuries at the hospital at around midday on May 14th.

He was admitted to hospital but his condition has deteriorated dramatically to the point that he was last night on a life-support machine in the intensive care unit with a HSE spokeswoman describing his condition as "critical".

He died there last night without regaining consciousness. A post mortem examination is to be carried out on his body later today.

Gardaí at Anglesea Street Garda Station in Cork City are investigating.
