Health insurer Bupa Ireland has announced the creation of 40 jobs and an associated investment of €1 million at its Co Cork headquarters.

It is to establish a new subsidiary, Bupa Member Services Ltd, which will provide pre-authorisation and transaction services for members of its corporate group schemes in Britain.

The move is understood to be significant for Bupa's Irish operations as it is the first time British customers will access services provided from here.

Bupa Ireland managing director Martin O'Rourke said Bupa Ireland's quality and excellence in customer service was widely acknowledged across the Bupa group.

"We are delighted to have secured the location of such high-calibre posts here in Ireland," said Mr O'Rourke.

"We have consistently grown our businesses over the last ten years and it is quite a coup to have won these jobs for Fermoy."

Following the recruitment for the new posts Bupa's Irish operations will employ almost 300 people.
